← Dive-sites: Glanrafon Slate Quarry
Description
Glanrafon is a huge pit quarry which is partially flooded near the bottom. the shear walls around the edge of the quarry drop several hundred feet before reaching the water and although one side has some piled slate it would be almost impossible to reach the water.
There a few tunnels leading around some edges of the quarry but the ones that are easily found seem to be short and are horizontal, not offering any descent into the quarry. There may have been a track (which has since been covered) or other tunnels leading out of the quarry but it’s not clear. A blondin system may have been used instead. There is another small pit to the west that may conceal an access point. More searching will be required.
The colour of the water in some other photos would suggest it’s fairly deep but has a shallow ledge near the surface, dropping off to another steep wall. Future work could involve lowering a depth gauge into the water from a line suspended over the quarry.
